The Cape Central Basketball program has been preparing for their upcoming season by partaking in open gym practices to prepare for further success. During the open gyms, the players run through drills that are preparing them for their upcoming season where coaches are pushing players in order to evaluate their skills.  

Junior guard Clayton McClard has high expectations heading into the season. McClard said, “Our team will preform well this season. We have a lot of returning players that will make a huge impact on our team.”

The Tigers are coming off an 11-9 season, which they tied the season series against Notre Dame, and took down their rivals the Jackson Indians. The team starts their season off with multiple tournaments including; 7th Annual Fountain City Classic (DeSoto), SEMO Conference Tournament (Sikeston), and the SE Missourian Christmas Tournament (Show Me Center).

Coach Drew Church said, “We start our year with the Fountain City Classic in Desoto and go right into the SEMO Conference tournament.  Both of these tourneys will be very competitive and have great atmospheres.”

The Tigers are scheduled to play their rivals, Notre Dame on 1/11, Jackson on 1/21, and Sikeston on 2/11. 

Junior guard Rashard Townsend is optimistic about how practices have been shaping up for the Tigers. Townsend said, “We are really just giving our all in practice and building the team chemistry as well.”

Along with Townsend, Coach Church agreed with what the junior guard had to say about practice and team-building.

Church said, “Our team is preparing by working very hard in practice to try get in shape, understand everyone’s role, and being consistent everyday.  We have a great group of young men who are a lot of fun to be around.  I look forward to watching them improve throughout the year. ”
