Week 5 Breakdown of the SEC East

Georgia (5-0)
There isn’t much to say about the Georgia Bulldogs except for, “wow”. Ranked unanimously first for the first time this season, the Dawgs are an absolute defensive powerhouse led by coach Kirby Smart. Georgia’s defense is allowing an average of less than one touchdown per game putting up a shout out in two of the six games they have played so far. The defense is spectacular, but there is no reason to overlook the quarterback to wide receiver duo of Stetson Bennett to Ladd McConkey, along with the force of Zamir White at running back. The Bulldogs keep steamrolling and are facing the undefeated Kentucky Wildcats at home this Saturday looking to extend their win-streak to six.

Kentucky (5-0)
Which Kentucky football team will we see in week six? Will we see the team that narrowly beat Chattanooga by five points, or will we see a dominant football team that beat the Florida Gators by a touchdown? The Kentucky offense has relied heavily on the legs and arm of Will Levis. In Levis’ last matchup against the LSU Tigers, Levis went 14/17 with three touchdown passes in the air, adding two more on the ground rushing. Another major asset the Wildcats possess is wideout Wan’Dale Robinson. Undoubtedly Will Levis’ favorite target, Robinson caught eight passes for 60 yards and a touchdown against LSU. The Wildcats have a tough task heading into week six facing the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs.

Tennessee (4-2)
In Tennessee’s last two matchups they have appeared to show great dominance over their opponents winning big in both games…but that was against Mizzou and South Carolina. Tennessee’s two losses on the season were at the hands of the Florida Gators, and the Pittsburgh Panthers. In the Vols’ game Saturday, October 9th, it finally seemed as if the redshirt senior quarterback Hendon Hooker was finally hitting his stride with the Tennessee offense. The senior threw for 225 yards, going 17/23 with a total of 3 TDs passing and 1 rushing. The Volunteers had a monstrous first half scoring 38 points while adding on a quiet 7 points to finish the game with 45. Although the Vols have shown great promise bouncing back from their loss at Florida with two blowout wins, the Volunteers have a rough 4-game stint getting ready to hit them head on. In their next four games, the Volunteers face No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 5 Alabama, No. 11 Kentucky, and No. 1 Georgia. Managing even one win in the next four games for Tennessee will be a major moral victory for the Volunteers. All odds are stacked against them.

Florida (4-2)
The Florida Gators took on the Vanderbilt Commodores in week five, and to no surprise they blew Vandy out of the water. Junior Quarterback Emory Jones has sealed his position as the starting QB for the Gators and Saturday he showed that he was capable of handling the tall task. Jones had a career day throwing the ball for 273 yards and 4 touchdowns to go along with it. Florida was coming off a disastrous loss to Kentucky mainly in part to the 15 penalties Florida accrued over the entirety of the game and lost by 7 to the Wildcats. Florida running back Dameon Pierce seemed to have put the Kentucky game behind him against Vanderbilt. Pierce rushed for 2 touchdowns and caught a 61-yard pass to give him 3 TDs on the day. The Gators play the LSU Tigers before they have a week off until they head to Jacksonville to face-off against the No. 1 team in the SEC and the country, the Georgia Bulldogs.

Missouri (3-3)
Jethro Franklin might not be the only person leaving Columbia this season after their recent matchups. The Tigers took on North Texas hoping for an easy win before taking on the red-hot Aggies at home, but in typical Tiger fashion, they made things more difficult on themselves. The Tigers were outplayed in the second half after leading North Texas by 24 at halftime. The North Texas QB Austin Aune went 16/26 for 305 yards and 4 touchdowns, outplaying Missouri QB Connor Bazelak who had an unimpressive performance going 21/32 racking up only 160 yards with 2 touchdowns. The Tigers have to improve in all aspects if they even remotely want a chance at stealing a win from Texas A&M. Coach Elijah Drinkwitz has to turn his program around, and do it quickly.

Vanderbilt (2-4)
Hopeless, dreadful, or whatever other adjective you want to use to describe how bad Vanderbilt’s football program is. Vanderbilt’s two wins came from a 2 point victory over quite possibly the worst team in Division 1 football the UConn Huskies, and a 3 point victory over Colorado State. Vanderbilt’s in conference games have both led to utter embarrassment at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs and the Florida Gators. The two SEC powerhouses combined for 104 points for and 0 points against the ‘Dores. In Commodores last game quarterback Ken Seals threw a total of 0 TDs and 2 INTs. The Commodores are struggling and all of their games are a testament to that. The Commodores need to turn things around or coach Clark Lea will be leaving the music city faster than when he got there.

South Carolina (3-3)
The South Carolina Gamecocks are a prime example of a mid-tier football team. With losses to Kentucky, Georgia, and Tennessee, the Gamecocks possess a 0-3 conference record. The Gamecocks got absolutely blown out of the water by the Tennessee Volunteers losing 45-20. The Gamecocks had quite the sad performance with only one touchdown thrown…by the punter. At halftime it was 38-7 but the Gamecocks did not completely cave in. The second half score tallied 13-7 in favor of the Gamecocks, but they couldn’t overcome the massive halftime deficit. The Gamecocks should be able to bounce back though since they are facing the highly coveted Vanderbilt Commodores, but the rest of the season doesn’t look too promising. The Gamecocks are facing off against Texas A&M, Florida, Clemson, and Auburn.
