Every year, math enthusiasts all know what day in March to look forward to. March 14, also known as Pi day, is a day that celebrates the never ending number. Pi, written as π, is the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. To find pi, you would divide the circumference by the diameter and you receive this never ending number.
March 14 is the chosen Pi day since the first 3 numbers of pi are 3.14, which correlates to when the date is written out as 3/14. Some enthusiastic people will even celebrate this at 1:59 since it then completes the 6 digits most people know when they talk about pi.
Pi day started back in 1988 when physicist Larry Shaw wanted to celebrate this never ending, never repeating number. He had made a bunch of circle shaped foods and invited some people to have tea and eat with them at the exploratorium. However, Pi day wasn’t recognized until 2009 when the house of representatives passed legislation to recognize the day nationally.
