Clubs are a great way to meet people at school and expand your experiences. Throughout the school year, it’s not unusual for students to get burnt out and need a break. Thankfully, Rebecca Allen, an English teacher here at Cape Central, had an idea to start the Unwind Club. The Unwind Club is an after school club to relax and forget about all the stressful things going on. Allen said, “I looked around and thought of a club that I would have liked when I was younger and in high school.” The students learn crafts and skills that help them relax. Sometimes they use these crafts as gifts for others. These gifts are very easy to make.
Allen plans to continue this club for many years because it helps students get to know other people. It gathers different age groups and develops relationships between students. This club is set to keep on growing and reaching more people as the year goes on. Allen says, “I hope this club will help de-stress students as much as possible and help the community as a whole relax.”
Overall the students have been responding well to this club. It has about 15 constant members. More people tend to join in the spring than fall due to marching band. As the year goes on, more tend to join. The Unwind Club meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month. A typical meeting starts with Allen taking attendance. She then gives out snacks, and they proceed to talk about what craft they are making. Once everyone is started on their craft, Allen helps the students by answering their questions and figuring out their problems. Then, they discuss their day and events they struggle with. They are able to communicate with each other about how they are feeling and how to help each other out. They also talk about what crafts they would like to see in the future and who they are making their craft for.
This club is perfect for people who want to relieve stress and need an outlet to decompress. It also gives students the opportunity to relate to people potentially going through the same things.
